This makes perfect sense. I’ll add that we don’t know what Trump conceded. My bet is no more wasting time with talk about dairy tariffs - it’s was agreed to in CUSMA but I bet they brought it to the table every time we were close to a change in steel and aluminum
Thanks so much, DBS — I’ve seen far too many clickbait takes framing this as “Canada caved.” Nothing could be further from the truth. We’ve been looking out for our own interests, keeping our eyes on the ball, and frankly handling the orange fiasco with a level of calm and strategy that makes me proud to be Canadian.
I didn’t think we caved, tbh as I was relieved for the few things that are only sourced from the USA that I can only supply my customers with, but I definitely didn’t think of this perspective! They served their purpose and I could see we need to try to protect our CUSMA agreement. I figure Carney has a plan and reasons for each step.
You have raised a point I probably should have included in the article. It is important to protect Canadian business like yours who work hard to keep us stocked with what we need. There is absolutely no shame or harm in continuing to purchase American sourced items when alternatives aren't available. The Canadian tarriffs on American goods have been a hardship for many Canadian SMEs –– and we want to grow our SMEs not lose them!
Heat is important and replacing that USA appliance is not feasible so having to pay more with the tariff on top of what are generally expensive parts affects Canadians. I will say most customers putting in a new appliance do prefer a Canadian manufacturer where available, it it hurts to penalize Canadians who bought years ago under totally different circumstances.

A very enlightening perspective, thanks for putting this out here!
